It’s been “all work and no play” for me for quite a while art-wise, and you know how it is — we get lots of ideas when we don’t have time to be putting them on paper. I wanted to make this one for malignantenthusiast for a pressie.

"Romanza", a Commission

This summer’s first commission for a very special friend and one of my earliest supporters is complete. I titled this “Romanza”, which is romance in Italian. When I was approached about the commission, all she gave me was the elements she wanted to see in the finished image and not dictating to me how she wanted the composition or the approach/interpretation was to be (which is always the best way to approach an artist, I think — too much details and we feel stifled and creative flow tends to stop). Since I love drawing/painting flowers and butterflies, I figured this would be a fun project and it was. ^^

The line art was probably even more detailed than many of my ‘usual’ pieces because of the depth of the poppy field and the monarch butterflies. When I first thought about the monarchs, I said, “Oh yeah, those orange and black butterflies” and forgot all about all the white spots! They are beautiful butterflies, but a little more work than some of my ‘standard’ butterfly wings I give to my fairies, which are usually the rainbow iridescent kind with no spots. :D

The other tricky thing about this piece was the predominant orange-red-black with green thrown in. I decided early on that I was going to subdue the green and rely mostly on the gold/ochre tone to pull together the orange-red-black. In the end, I just added a tiny hint of blue to the green that is closest to the viewer to freshen up the leaves, but for the most part, this piece is all about orange-red-black.

Poppies are one of those flowers that can be simplified to a red circle with a black dot and still be recognized as such by most anyone. So I was able to let loose on pretty much the top half of the image where the flowers recede farther and farther. At the same time, this piece provided the opportunity to draw a close-up of the flowers with thin, crinkly, paper-like petals to the magical shades of black on the spots and the numerous stamens. A fun challenge and a wonderful opportunity for study.

I really enjoyed working on this piece, especially during the coloring phase. I was determined to give a little extra something to my very special friend’s commission and I hope I managed to do so. ^^

"Enchanted Visions" Complete

”Enchanted Visions”, the monthly theme for May 2012 of the Enchanted Visions Project. This is our last monthly theme for the first half of 2012 as we go into a summer hiatus. I am relieved to get this one finished. Now I can get going on my story book illustration project and several commission projects that are waiting to be completed during the summer months.

I had gardening going on in the months of April and May that I didn’t get to work steadily on any major piece. This is barely my second piece of the month of May. Thank goodness the gardens are all taken care of and the bulk of my work outdoor is finished for now. ^_^

"Enchanted Visions" Line

The Enchanted Visions Project’s May 2012 theme is “Enchanted Visions”. I just finished inking this piece not too long ago. I still have coloring to do and it’s way past the deadline already. Guess I didn’t make it with all the extra gardening and end-of-the-school-year events to attend.

Anyhow, the inspiration for my interpretation of the theme “Enchanted Visions” is the series of infamous 1917 photographs of fairies known as the Cottingley Fairies. There were two girls making pictures using cutout figures of fairies in the foreground. They look faked to our eyes, but back then, they caused quite a sensation and were even touted by some as the “definitive proof” of fairies’ existence. They are definitely enchanting, whimsical, and charming. I love these girls’ imagination and inner visions to have created such magical images.

I wanted to capture the essence of those magical old photographs, with a bit more interaction between the human girl and the fairies. I’m looking forward to getting started with the coloring phase.

An Art Trade Piece: "Lost in the Woods"

Here’s a piece I made for a dear friend on deviantART for an art trade we decided to have. She sent me her work way sooner than I was able to return the favor. T_T *shame as always in these things*

I like the way it turned out. I tried to make it look more traditional, although anything other than the line art itself were done digitally. And it’s very different from my usual stuff. I love the warm, earthy feel, as well as the simple understated approach. Working on this piece made me realize how much I missed these guys from my Sketchbook Project 2011.

Dream A Little Dream

I was cleaning my folders and sorting files (mostly deleting old, unused files from who knows when…) this morning and came across an alternate color version of my “Wisteria” piece. I think I did this after I had finished the purple and green version. Anyhow, the colors I used are pinks and browns and very high-key. I never did anything with it till today. I thought it would make a pretty tag with the original fairy. This was very quickly put together (Thank goodness for masks! I love them. ^^). Basically only two layers of images with a very simple text overlay (Plus a few layers of sparkles from the “Over the Rainbow” Collab Kit from March 2012 because I just LOVE sparkles.). The mask I used in the background was a freebie from a wonderful blog by Mistress V (Signature Collections).

I’m using the full-size version on my official site’s welcome page. It goes well with the floral background — I like it. :D

The tube used here is, of course, my “Wisteria”, and you can get it at PSP Tube Stop. It’s perfect for spring and delightfully feminine. ^^

Coloring Book Giveaway

Fun with Colored Pencil

Finished coloring the first page of my coloring book, which will be given away soon on my facebook page. This is the collection of 19 fantasy line art of mine, published by Ellen Million Graphics. The book came out late last year, and I just got my second shipment sent to me last month. You can buy the book directly from me at my site. Last time I checked, Amazon.com seller is out of stock (and they don’t know when or if they’ll get them restocked…).

This page was colored primarily with Prismacolor colored pencil with no blender. The only part that used another medium was the highlights in her eyes. I’ll sign this piece to the winner of the random drawing. Maybe it will be a collector’s item someday. XD

Anyhow, I’d love it if you’d stop by my facebook page sometime. I’ll announce the giveaway details once it reaches 500 ‘like’s (And we’re really close…). It will be very simple — a basic ‘enter to win’ kind of thing where you won’t have to do much at all.
